Based on research among adult education providers in New York State, this article provides a current perspective on the role of needs assessments in the field. Realizing that recent research and literature in this area of adult education programming has been sparse. this article surveys current practice and recommendations by practitioners. Additionally, it presents a comparison of theory and practice. Adult educators in the field urge their colleagues to explore and maximize the use of needs assessments for their programs and learners
