Note:Microclimatic, physiological and genetic controls on net co2 flux in populations of the moss species P. commune and P. alpinum were studied with an emphasis on arctic tundra plants. Light exposure varied among the three habitats studied near Barrow, Alaska. Diurnal co2 exchange there remained positive in unshaded samples during the early 1973 growing season, but decreased with photoperiod beginning early August. Samples from a shaded habitat required the least light for photosynthesis. Respiration of the belowground rhizomes which comprise about 30% of the total moss biomass significantly reduced the total carbon gain.
