Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Studies inlaboratory animals indicate that it plays an important role in experience-dependentneuroplasticity and reward-related learning including the acquisition of drug-seeking andtaking behaviors, such as alcohol use.
