This thesis studies the centrality of the flâneur in Edouard Dujardin's novel Les lauriers sont coupés (1887). This book has its place in literary history as the first stream-of-consciousness novel; thus, critics until now have mostly considered the text from this viewpoint. Without disregarding this particular quality, this research shows that the interest in Les lauriers sont coupés also lies elsewhere. After retracing the flâneur's history within the epistemology of the nineteenth century, this thesis shows the correspondence between Les lauriers's main character and the « man of the arcades », as Walter Benjamin would have said, an urban and elusive figure in contradiction with society and its value system.
