Ciudadanos imaginados: historia y ficción en las narrativas televisadas durante el Bicentenario de la independencia en Colombia, Chile y Argentina

This dissertation examines the symbolic representation of contemporary social and political issues in three historical telefictions broadcasted during the Bicentennial of Independence in 2010, La Pola, amar la hizo libre (Colombia), Martín Rivas, aventuras de un soñador (Chile) and Lo que el tiempo nos dejó (Argentina). I analyze how these telefictions become mediators of the contemporary citizen’s concerns and cultural values, how their context of production influences historical fiction and the ideological and political implications of these projects.Drawing on the work on melodrama and the melodramatic mode by theorists such as Peter Brooks, Jesus Martín-Barbero, Carlos Monsiváis, Hermann Herlinghaus and Matthew Bush, I propose an interpretation and interpellation of the imagined citizens of each country. In this context, their cultural identity develops, on the one hand, from a dialogue between the official history, literature and film and the social conflicts still unresolved in the present and, on the other, from the archival documents and images inserted into the telefictions that dilute boundaries between history and fiction. These characteristics confined to the plot’s fictional frame represent the past of each society and thus justify a collective present.This study begins with the Introduction that contextualizes the celebration of the Bicentennial of Independence and the different manifestations that this event generates, followed by a brief review of the relationship between history and fiction, and the concept of melodrama and its connection with television and Latin American telefiction. Chapter 1 analyzes La Pola, amar la hizo libre that presents the case of the fictionalization of Policarpa Salavarrieta’s life, the most appreciated Colombian heroine, through the historical telenovela. Chapter 2 examines the Chilean production Martín Rivas, aventuras de un soñador which approaches the fiction through the adaptation of the foundational novel of Alberto Blest Gana into a historical period telenovela. Chapter 3 analyzes the Argentine TV series Lo que el tiempo nos dejó that proposes the possible stories around historical moments in the collective memory of the Argentine people, and projects the recent past of the country as the foundational period of that of the Bicentennial.Cette thèse étudie la représentation symbolique des problèmes sociaux et politiques contemporains dans trois téléfictions historiques, La Pola, amar la hizo libre (Colombie), Martín Rivas, aventuras de un soñador (Chili) et Lo que El tiempo nos dejó (Argentine), toutes diffusées pendant le Bicentenaire de l’Indépendance en 2010 dans chacun de ces pays. J’analyse comment ces fictions télévisées jouent le rôle de médiateurs entre les préoccupations et les valeurs culturelles du citoyen actuel, comment leur contexte de production influence la fiction historique et quelles sont les implications idéologiques et politiques qui en résultent.Sur la base des études théoriques concernant le mélodrame et le mode mélodramatique de théoriciens tels que Peter Brooks, Jésus Martín-Barbero, Carlos Monsiváis, Hermann Herlinghaus et Matthew Bush, entre autres, je propose une interprétation et une interpellation des citoyens imaginés de chaque pays dont la narration provient de l’intertextualité et de l’intermédialité. Ces caractéristiques confinées au cadre fictif de l’intrigue représentent le passé de chaque société, tout en justifiant un présent collectif.La présente étude commence par l’introduction qui contextualise la célébration du Bicentenaire de l’Indépendance et les différentes manifestations que celui-ci génère, suivie d’une brève revue de la relation entre l’histoire et la fiction, ainsi que le concept du mélodrame et son lien avec la télévision et la téléfiction latino-américaine. Le chapitre 1 analyse La Pola, amar la hizo libre qui présente le cas de la fictionnalisation de la vie de Policarpa Salavarrieta, l’héroïne colombienne la plus aimée, à travers la telenovela historique. Le chapitre 2 examine la production chilienne Martín Rivas, aventuras de un soñador qui réalise une adaptation du roman éponyme du 19ème siècle, considéré comme la fiction fondatrice chilienne, en une telenovela d’époque. Le chapitre 3 analyse la mini-série télévisée argentine Lo que el tiempo dejó. Cette série raconte des histoires possibles autour des moments et personnages historiques du 20ème siècle qui restent dans la mémoire collective de l’Argentine, en proposant le passé récent du pays comme la période fondatrice de celui du Bicentenaire
