Learning to find our way in a new environment is a process that involves perceptual, mnemonic, and executive components that are mediated by a large network of brain structures. There are also different ways of learning to navigate in an environment. The spatial memory strategy involves learning the spatial relationships between the landmarks in our surroundings, while the stimulus-response strategy involves learning stimulus-response associations, like learning a route. These navigation strategies are subserved by distinct neural networks, in which the hippocampus and caudate nucleus play a pivotal role.
