This thesis proposes a framework for using an artificial neural network (ANN) as a uniform and universal method for modelling the behaviour of both isotropic and anisotropic materials, exhibiting hysteresis or not. It addresses the complex task of coupling a given material representation with a true analysis system, i.e. one based on finite element analysis.
