Because of this aridity, evaporation from the Gulf is extremely high (1.84 meters per year) and far exceeds the sum of freshwater inflow to the Gulf, mainly from precipitation and some from river flow. A residual circulation exists between the Gulf and the Indian Ocean such that saline water flows into the Gulf from the Indian Ocean in order to balance the freshwater deficit due to high evaporation rate; and since ...
