: New palaeoenvironmental data from southern France at ca. 30000 14C yr BP: The case of the Marie cave (Hérault)

Abridged English version includedInternational audienceThe Marie cave, discovered to the north of Montpellier, Hérault (France), has yielded a fauna of 28 vertebrates, out of which 23 are small to large mammals, notably Mammuthus primigenius . The few discovered artefacts have been attributed to the Upper Palaeolithic, which is in agreement with the two radiocarbon dates (31450 14C yr BP for the low level, and 28680 14C yr BP near the caveʼs entrance). The palynological study shows the existence (i ) of a wooded steppe on the plateau, and (ii ) of a riverine forest with alders in the valleys, associated with Mediterranean taxa. These data confirm the presence in Languedoc of Mediterranean species around 30000yr BP, which qualifies the hypothesis of exclusively Spanish and Italian refuges during glacial periods.La grotte Marie, découverte au nord de Montpellier (Hérault), a livré une faune de 28 vertébrés, dont 23 mammifères de petite à très grande taille, notamment Mammuthus primigenius . Les quelques artefacts découverts ont été attribués au Paléolithique supérieur, ce qui est en accord avec les deux datations 14C (31450 ans BP pour le niveau bas et 28680 ans BP près de l'entrée de la grotte). L'étude palynologique montre l'existence (i ) d'une steppe arborée sur le plateau et (ii ) d'une ripisylve à aulnes dans les vallées, associée à des taxons méditerranéens. Ces données confirment la présence en Languedoc d'espèces méditerranéennes autour de 30000 ans BP, ce qui module l'hypothèse de refuges exclusivement espagnols et italiens durant les périodes glaciaires
