This chapter addresses the important topic of electrocatalysis in ionic liquids. In particular, it introduces why electrocatalysis might change when moving from conventional to ionic liquid systems, and gives examples relating to reduction (protons, oxygen, carbon dioxide) and oxidation (hydrogen, methanol, formic acid and carbon monoxide) processes. Water splitting assisted by ionic liquids, the synthesis of electrocatalysts using ionic liquids, and electrocatalysis in relation to electroanalysis will also be discussed. Ultimately, numerous examples of ‘ionic liquid effects’ on electrocatalysis are presented and discussed
