The aim of this thesis was to investigate techniques for improving the energy conversion efficiency of high efficiency silicon solar cells. This aim was achieved with the development of novel PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) and PERL (Passivated Emitter and Rear Locally-diffused) cell structures of performance markedly superior to that established by the earlier PESC (Passivated Emitter Solar Cell) cells at the start of the thesis. An additional achievement was the demonstration of substantial improvements in the cell performance under the space solar spectrum.
