Building an Engineering Education Publication Portfolio - Reflections of Scholarly Teachers

For many disciplinary experts, it can be a challenge to shift from their particular research andpublication culture into a learning and teaching publication modality as it represents a verydifferent way of approaching, conceiving, planning, and executing research.In this interactive workshop, you will hear about how to develop a strategy for building yourown education focused research and publication portfolio. The three presenters willcollaboratively walk you through the steps of identifying publication opportunities aroundyour teaching practice from novice to expert, with respect to where to start, through to how tolead. They will cover aspects of designing rigorous research around your teaching practice,collecting data, interpreting data, communicating outcomes, and improving practice basedon lessons learned. They will explore adopting existing methodology and frameworks andgradually developing your own, through reflective case studies from their own practices.Together, we will discuss where, how, and in what ways to produce high-quality andhopefully high-impact publications via conferences, journals and book chapters. We willdiscuss how to build leadership in the engineering education domain by accumulatingeditorial, conference chair, and track leader experience. You will hear about where and howto find supports through collaboration, grants, training, mentorship, and becoming part ofbuilding the engineering education community at UNSW.At the conclustion of this workshop, you will be able to discover where to find examples of,and how to become familiar with, learning and teaching best practice; develop clearstrategies for literature review, systematic planning, testing, revising and obtaining peerreview of your ideas; understand the technology that will be able to support you in measuringteaching impact and improvements; and how to design assessments to assist you
