Context: Obesity is a major contributor to burden of disease and occurs in 28% of primary care patients in Australia (28%). Patient knowledge and skills are sorely tested by the complexities of diet and physical activity information. Low health literacy skills compromise the ability of patients with obesity to change their behaviours, communicate and use primary care services effectively. Obese patients with low health literacy suffer stigma and are often assumed by providers to have low motivation.
