Spillways for embankment dams commonly feature unlined channels. A concrete ogee crest or concrete-lined section may often be used, but for economic reasons, the length of lining is limited, and flows discharge onto an unlined section, often via a dissipator or flip-bucket structure. The risk of erosion is a critical consideration in design or surveillance of unlined spillways. This paper provides an appraisal of the available methods for assessment, or design, for erosion of unlined spillways in rock. The paper draws on the findings of a recent investigation based upon inspection and review of over 30 dams in Australia, South Africa and the USA
