In the present study we investigated the visual processing of contours defined by constant curvature and their statistics in natural scenes. In Experiment 1, we examined the degree to which human sensitivity to contours is affected by disrupting contour curvature continuity by varying the orientation of end elements. We find that the detection of contours was dependent on the angle of curvature, with contours of smaller curvature (<30°) most detectable, and on the orientation of end elements. The latter finding revealed that end elements that were oriented in the direction (i.e., clockwise) of curvature lead to best performance.
