This paper discusses the use of risk assessment and risk management techniques within the Australian underground coal mining industry, within the context of geotechnical risk. The industry works within a pro-active, “enabling” legislative framework, where companies and management apply a range of risk assessment tools as part of their everyday management processes. Different geotechnical risk factors and approaches are reviewed, together with application examples – ranging from mine planning and design, operations, and accident investigations.A particularly powerful resource in each of the above stages of geotechnical management is the RISKGATE system.
