Over the past two decades, blast loads have been recognised as one of the extreme loading events that must be considered in the design of important structures such as cable-stayed bridges. However, the design provisions for blast-resistant bridges are limited due to inadequate knowledge of the local and global dynamic response of the bridge under the blast loading scenarios. An explosion can result in partial collapse of the bridge and significant loss of life and property, as well as social and economic devastation. To design blast-resistant bridges, an understanding of the blast wave propagation and its effects on bridge structures are required.
