Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a heterogeneous blood disease with high relapse rates. A small population of highly drug resistant leukaemic stem cells (LSC) persists after chemotherapy, causing disease relapse. This emphasises the need to develop novel LSC-targeted therapies. While increasing evidence has emerged in recent years highlighting the role of epigenetic regulators in cancer development and maintenance, knowledge in epigenetic regulation of LSC is limited. This study investigated the role of two novel histone demethylases, Jmjd1c and Jmjd5, in regulating LSC, as well as the effectiveness of currently available epigenetic agents on leukaemogenesis. This study has shown that Jmjd1c is required for AML development and maintenance.
