Gestures are appealing as a natural and intuitive form of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). This thesis presents an empirical evaluation of whole-of-body gesture design and recognition. A user-centric design experiment precedes the application and evaluation of machine learning techniques.Initially, user preferred whole-of-body gestures to control an avatar in a high fidelity 3D virtual environment were collected through a participatory design study. Thereafter, in order to identify archetypal gesture patterns, collected designs were codified using a formal notation based on Laban Movement Analysis.
