Diabetes is a disease of insufficient insulin production from pancreatic beta cells. This arises as a consequence of: 1) beta cell destruction by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1 beta, IFN-gamma, and TNF-alpha in type 1 diabetes (T1D); or 2) the failure of beta cells to cope with the development of insulin resistance and obesity in type 2 diabetes (T2D). In both cases, the mechanisms underlying beta cell failure remain unknown.
