The present thesis investigated the behavioural and prefrontal cortical mechanisms underlying extinction and recovery of drug-seeking. Rats were trained to self-administer alcoholic beer, extinguished, and then recovery of drug-seeking was assessed using one of two preparations. In reacquisition, the rate of retraining to self-administer alcoholic beer was examined after extinction training. In renewal, animals were tested without reinforcement in the self-administration context, where drug-seeking recovered, and the extinction context, where there were low levels of drug-seeking. The first series of experiments examined the role of context in the reacquisition of extinguished alcoholic beer-seeking. These experiments showed that reacquisit...
A critical barrier to recovery from alcohol addiction is relapse propensity. Alcohol cues can trigge...
This thesis presents a rat model, by which the effects of repeated ethanol withdrawal on withdrawal ...
In humans, stimuli associated with alcohol availability can provoke relapse during abstinence. In th...
Drug addiction is a chronically relapsing condition, and current relapse prevention therapies are no...
Abstract: Environments in which the pharmacological effects of alcohol have been experienced become ...
Extinction promotes abstinence from drug seeking. Extinction expression is an active process, depend...
Relapse following abstinence from drug use remains the major impediment for the treatment of addicti...
The environment in which alcohol consumption occurs may trigger later relapse in alcohol abusers. In...
Extinction learning suppresses conditioned reward responses and is thus fundamental to adapt to chan...
Drug seeking behavior can be reduced or inhibited via extinction. The brain mechanisms for extinctio...

We studied the role of lateral hypothalamus (LH) in context-induced reinstatement (renewal) of rewar...
In humans, places or contexts previously associated with alcohol use often provoke relapse during ab...
