L'INVERSION LOCATIVE REVISITÉE : À PROPOS DE LA NOTION DE « DÉCLENCHEUR »

International audienceThis article deals with the notion of « déclencheur » (« trigger »), applied to the initial locative adverbial occurring in locative inversions. It is shown that being a stage topic is necessary but not a sufficient condition for the adverbial to entail subject inversion. In macro-syntactic terms : the adverbial must be an intra-predicative constituent, which occupies (or, at least, is co-indexed with) the first position in the kernel. Such a condition is impossible to verify looking only at the initial place from a linear point of view. The notion of « déclencheur » thus appears to be a convenient expression rather than an operative concept.L'article examine les enjeux de la notion de « déclencheur » de l'inversion du sujet, parfois utilisée à propos du locatif initial dans l'inversion locative. Il est montré que, pour entraîner l'inversion du sujet, la présence d'un locatif initial thématique et cadratif constitue une condition nécessaire mais non suffisante: en termes macro-syntaxiques, le locatif doit être un constituant intra-prédicatif qui occupe (ou qui est co-indexé à) la première position du noyau. Or au fil de l'énoncé, à partir de la seule place initiale, il est impossible de vérifier cette condition. Il s'avère donc que la notion de déclencheur, qui engage une appréhension linéaire de l'énoncé, constitue davantage une commodité de langage qu'un concept véritablement opératoire
