Az Elveszett Paradicsom fogadtatásában igen korán, gyakorlatilag a mű megjelenésével egyidőben megjelenik az a kultikus beszédmód, amely az eposzt az Ilias és az Odysseia szintjére, szerzőjét pedig a Homérost megillető helyre, sőt, gyakran akár a görög költő fölé helyezi. Az idővel kritikai közhellyé formálódó és a mű történeti recepciójába is beépülő véleményért részben Milton is „felelős”: az Elveszett Paradicsom epikus narrátora több helyen hasonlítja önmagát Homéroshoz, tárgyát pedig az Ilias vagy az Odysseia témájához.
