Regio II. Apulia et Calabria. Genusia

The paper proposes a systematic study of the epigraphic documentation referring to the ancient municipium of Genusia (current Ginosa), aimed at the reconstruction of the articulated event settlement of this municipium of Regio Secunda, already important indigenous settlement in Peucetian age and later civitas sociorum until the Bellum Sociale. Considering and appropriately valuing the documentation available on the entire sector identified by Genusinus ager – itinerary and literary sources, archaeological evidences, material culture – according to a broad chronological excursus that, in order to offer a complete, full and consistent picture, however, dates back to the Protohistoric period and takes place until the beginning of the Middle Ages, the careful analysis of the lowly Latin epigraphic documents presented, both known both unpublished, is performed by timely study of each epigraph, supported by paleographic autopsy and historical analysis of the epigraphic monuments – where possible –, prosopographic and onomastic study, socio-economic research. The work of ‘global’ approach to epigraphic documentation so expressed also allowed to draw a historical-archaeological picture with less nuanced and more consistent outlines – than the reconstructions so far known –: so it was possible to identify the political, institutional and socio-economic history, the relationship with the nearby regiona, as well as the structure of the property and land and environmental management that accompany the development of an important sector in central part of Apulia, between Jonic and Adriatic Seas, in ancient times.Il contributo propone lo studio sistematico della documentazione epigrafica riferita al centro di Genusia (attuale Ginosa), finalizzato alla ricostruzione della articolata vicenda insediativa di questo municipium della regio secunda, già importante insediamento indigeno in età peucezia e successivamente civitas sociorum fino al bellum sociale. Considerando e opportunamente valorizzando la documentazione disponibile sull’intero comparto individuato dal Genusinus ager – fonti letterarie e itinerarie, evidenze archeologiche, cultura materiale –, secondo un ampio excursus cronologico che, al fine di offrire un quadro completo e coerente, risale tuttavia al periodo protostorico e si svolge fino alle soglie del Medioevo, l’attenta analisi dei pur pochi documenti epigrafici latini disponibili, di cui uno presentato per la prima volta in maniera sistematica, è condotta mediante puntuale approfondimento dei singoli titoli, sorretto da analisi autoptica paleografica e storico-monumentale – ove possibile –, studio prosopografico e onomastico, esame socio-economico. Il lavoro di approccio ‘globale’ alla documentazione epigrafica così espresso ha consentito altresì di disegnare un quadro storico-archeologico dai contorni meno sfumati e più coerenti – rispetto alle ricostruzioni finora note –, entro il quale si articolano e trovano consistenza la vicenda politico-istituzionale e socio-economica, il rapporto con i comparti viciniori, nonché l’assetto delle proprietà e la gestione agrosilvopastorale del territorio che accompagnano lo sviluppo di un settore di sicura importanza nel comprensorio centrale della Puglia jonico-adriatica in età antica
