The aim of the project “Archaeological and Epigraphic Investigations in the Tigray Region (1st millennium BC-7th century AD)” is the study of ancient Ethiopian civilisations. This includes transition between different periods of ancient history, the transformation of the natural environment and types of human settlements. The site of Wakarida, chosen as the first study area, is situated near the eastern edge of the Tigray plateau, dominating the Afar depression. The site, covering some 9 ha, was probably a small city or town during the middle and late Aksumite periods (3rd-7th centuries AD).
