Un nouveau témoignage du commerce antique aux portes des Alpes : la fouille du musée d’Aoste (Isère)

The recent discovery of an amphora covered pit in the center of Aoste (Isère, France) has provided evidence for a new analysis of the economic and commercial role of the vicus Augusti in the city of Vienne throughout the Late Roman Empire. It holds a key position amidst an important land and river network, at the gates of the Alps. The agglomerate was most probably founded under Augustus and used its strategic position for political and economic gain. The reappraisal of old data and the recovery of new material testimony demonstrate that the present-day city was built over a commercial and artisan district. Archaeological evidence shows a pottery’s area (with ovens, tanks, and refuse and clay extraction grounds) that was likely to be placed in the periphery of a commercial area. The existence of this area is probable due to the discovery of an important quantity of amphorae and the discovery of traces of a monument that might have been a macellum. A repackaging process for products from the Mediterranean, arriving from Lyon or Vienne in amphorae, was most probably made here, in the economical center of the vicus in view of a regional redistribution.La découverte récente d’une fosse comblée d’amphores dans le centre d’Aoste (Isère) a fourni l’occasion de reconsidérer le rôle économique et commercial du vicus Augusti dans la cité de Vienne au cours du Haut-Empire. Positionnée au coeur d’un réseau routier et fluvial important, aux portes des Alpes, l’agglomération, fondée très certainement sous Auguste, a tiré de sa position stratégique de notables avantages politiques et surtout économiques. Le réexamen des données anciennes et l’apport de nouveaux documents montrent que le bourg actuel est construit sur un quartier à vocation artisanale et commerciale. De nombreux témoignages archéologiques attestent, en effet, une zone d’ateliers de céramiques (fours, dépotoirs, fosses d’extractions, bassins) probablement localisée en périphérie d’une place commerciale. Cette dernière est suspectée par la découverte, d’une part, de lots amphoriques importants et, d’autre part, de vestiges d’un monument qui renvoient peut-être à un macellum. Un processus de reconditionnement des produits d’origine méditerranéenne, arrivés de Lyon ou de Vienne en amphores, était vraisemblablement effectué dans le centre économique du vicus pour une redistribution à l’échelle régionale.Helly Benoît, Silvino Tony.
