The recent discovery of an amphora covered pit in the center of Aoste (Isère, France) has provided evidence for a new analysis of the economic and commercial role of the vicus Augusti in the city of Vienne throughout the Late Roman Empire. It holds a key position amidst an important land and river network, at the gates of the Alps. The agglomerate was most probably founded under Augustus and used its strategic position for political and economic gain. The reappraisal of old data and the recovery of new material testimony demonstrate that the present-day city was built over a commercial and artisan district.
