Since 1999 Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have been granted responsibilities and a status of their own, under the devolution principle. This principle allocates specific room for manoeuvre to each region, notably in the field of economic development. In England, up to now, regionalization has been promoted through central government bodies and has had no other purpose than reducing disparities between places.
