An economic typology of the E.C.'s regions is based on the regional domestic products pattern and on an analysis of the structure of these G.D.P. The spatial pattern can be summarized as four concentric belts : the central one, including the big polyfunctional metropolitan areas, with the top-management of the economy ; the fringes of the centre ; the intermediate areas ; the poor external periphery. The trends during the last thirty years leads to decreasing inter-regional disparities until the beginning of the 80's, and a stabilization during the 80's.
