Les localisations industrielles en espace rural : l'exemple de l'arrondissement de Cambrai

The study of industry in rural environment is particularly relevant in the district of Cambrai. This region is endowed with a significant heritage of cottage industry , dating back to the sixteenth century, tradition has been taken up again and altered during the nineteenth century industrial revolution, especially in the field of textile. Having defined the concept of industry in a rural environment, we'll analyse, more specifically, its structural characteristics in the Cambrai district. Studying the activities and structures of industrial works according to size, as well as the structure of employment according to geography, will enable us to stress the two-fold aspect of the region of rural Cambrai : Activity is slack in the Eastern part of the district, mostly dominated by small or medium-sized textile mills, whereas the Western part benefits from a greater diversification of its activities, from the presence of larger mills, and from its proximity to Cambrai itself. A network of major routes, resulting from the interest marked by the Regional Development Plan, helps in livening up the district.Le Cambrésis constitue un terrain privilégié pour l'étude de l'industrie en milieu rural. Depuis le XVIème siècle, il a derrière lui un long héritage artisanal, repris et transformé par la révolution industrielle au XIXème siècle, notamment dans le textile. Après avoir précisé le concept d'industrie en milieu rural, il s'agit ici d'observer les caractères structurels de l'industrie des zones rurales de l'arrondissement de Cambrai. L'étude des activités, de la structure par taille des établissements industriels, ainsi que celle de l'emploi dans les différents secteurs géographiques de l'arrondissement , nous permet de montrer le caractère dual du Cambrésis rural : à un Est-Cambrésis en perte de vitesse où dominent de petits ou moyens établissements textiles , s'oppose un Cambrésis de l'Escaut aux activités plus diverses et aux établissements plus gros, dynamisé par la présence de Cambrai et surtout d'axes de communications importants privilégiés dans les choix de l'aménagement du territoire.Paris Didier.
