Recent geographical and sociological works on the becoming of the rural areas in France and in the Western countries alternate between the sets of themes of the rebirth or of the rural crisis. With through the example of Thiérache, a space with a rural dominant, located in contact with North, Picardy, Ardennes and Belgium, this article shows that the situations are sometimes intermediate and often temporary. The thierachian space underwent triple demographic, socio-economic and space crisis. The marks are durably present on the men and the territories.
