People in the wood, people of wood. Myths and realities on forest activity in Var (France). Nowadays, woods cover about 75 % of the Var district which is twice as much as the surface previously occupied between the two world wars. Through the last three quarters of the century, the aspect of this forest, assimilated to what the people of the Var district call «collines », and the profile of its inhabitants have changed. Polyvalent peasants of the past have been replaced by employees working for companies that were no longer bound to rural areas.
