Hommes du bois, hommes de bois : mythes et réalités autour des activités forestières dans le Var

People in the wood, people of wood. Myths and realities on forest activity in Var (France). Nowadays, woods cover about 75 % of the Var district which is twice as much as the surface previously occupied between the two world wars. Through the last three quarters of the century, the aspect of this forest, assimilated to what the people of the Var district call «collines », and the profile of its inhabitants have changed. Polyvalent peasants of the past have been replaced by employees working for companies that were no longer bound to rural areas. A similar mutation had taken place between 1850 and 1950 : native peasants / forest-wor-kers have been then progressively replaced by expatriâtes coming from Italy, then from Spain. The socio-economical origin of this foreign manpower was very close to the local one and did not alter the forest physiognomy, neither in its natural, nor in its human dimension. Most of new-comers had easily adopted the social skills of the host society by choosing an territory, by gaining a thorough knowledge of this territory and by transformating their work area into a setdement area, which status varied from occasional to permanent. The mastery of a craft or practice (charcoal making, breeding...), the development of a network of professional relationships, as well as friendly or fàmily relationships, the setding in a village and / or the home-ownership, are evidence for the will of the «people in the wood » to integrated themselves into a village society that ended up appreciating them, for their adaptability as much as for their exceptional character.La forêt couvre actuellement environ 75 % du département du Var, soit le double de la superficie quelle occupait jusque dans la période de l'entre-deux guerres. Pendant ces trois quarts de siècle, l'aspect de cette forêt, assimilée à ce que les Varois appellent «colline», et le profil des gens la fréquentant, ont changé. Les paysans polyvalents d'«autrefois» ont été remplacés par des employés d'entreprises dissociées du milieu rural. Entre 1850 et 1950, une mutation semblable avait eu lieu : les paysans / forestiers autochtones avaient été progressivement remplacés par des émigrés venus d'Italie, puis d'Espagne. L'origine socioéconomique de cette main-d'œuvre étrangère était très proche de celle de la main-d'oeuvre locale et n'avait pas altéré la physionomie de la forêt, ni dans sa dimension naturelle, ni dans sa dimension humaine. La plupart des nouveaux venus avaient adopté sans peine la façon de vivre des sociétés d'accueil à travers le choix d'un territoire d'action, la connaissance approfondie de ce territoire et la transformation des lieux de travail en lieux d'habitat dont le statut variait d'occasionnel à permanent. La maîtrise d'un savoir-faire (charbonnage, conduite des troupeaux...), le développement d'un réseau de relations professionnelles, amicales, familiales..., l'installation au village et I ou l'accession à la propriété, sont autant de manifestations de la volonté des «hommes des bois» à s'intégrer à une société villageoise qui a fini par les apprécier, tout autant pour leur conformité que pour leur exception.Acovitsioti-Hameau Ada.
