Great River Culture. A great river is a territory, a long, drawn-out territory, sometimes a frontier or a boundary, along which men have set up and developed social, cultural and economic activities. It has a direct influence on the way they organise their time and space and, like the sea or the mountains, is a natural fea-ture which has always been a challenge to be faced, a threat they have tried to ward off, while continuing to attempt to eke out a living from it. Thus man has developed around this inescapable presence, knowledge, know-how, techniques, beliefs, and mental images.
