Beaugé (Gilbert). — From the appearances of features to the features of appearances. Photography and anthropology : 1839-1912. The meeting of photography and anthropology is still at an early stage, but is caught under the threat of a double misunderstanding, i.e. that the image might be taken for a substitute of reality, or that it yields to the demands of the anthropologic object in making. For more than sixty years, photography has been confronted to the other techniques of representation and reproduction (painting, sculpture, casting, etc.) before falling prey to the spectacular outbidding the object of anthropology itself will be submitted to. This paper goes through the various episodes of this encounter : antagonism between art and science, demands for measurements, institutional arbitration and requirements of museums. Our suggestion here is that rewriting the history of anthropology, in keeping with its own iconographic scope — by placing it within a general history of viewing — , would help cast a new light on the conceptual and discursive framework of this knowledge.La rencontre entre la photographie et l'anthropologie, relativement précoce, s'opère à l'enseigne d'un double malentendu : que l'image puisse apparaître comme un substitut possible du réel, et qu'elle se plie aux exigences de la construction de l'objet de l'anthropologie. Pendant plus de soixante ans, la photographie va être confrontée aux autres techniques de la représentation et de la reproduction (peinture, sculpture, moulage, etc.), avant d'épouser la surenchère spectaculaire auquel l'objet même de l'anthropologie sera soumis. Cet article explore les différents épisodes de cette rencontre : l'antagonisme entre l'art et la science, les exigences de la mesure, l'arbitrage institutionnel et l'insistance du musée. Il suggère que la réécriture de l'histoire de l'anthropologie selon l'ordre de ses raisons iconographiques, en plaçant celle-ci dans une histoire généralisée du regard, serait de nature à éclairer d'un jour nouveau la trame conceptuelle et discursive de ce savoir.Beaugé Gilbert.
