Laurence (Pierre). — Variations on the same instrument. The oboe in Bas-Languedoc from the XVIIIth to the XXth century. In the Bas-Languedoc (région of Sète, Montpellier, Nîmes), the oboe was very popular, at least from the second part of the XVIIIth century, to the beginning of the XXth. It is still in use today, in accompaniment of water-jousts. The existence of an important historical documentation allows the author to study the evolution of oboe uses and its domain of distribution on a long term basis. Then the author analyses the perception of this instrument at différent times, especially as an emblem of régional identity, trying to distinguish the vision of lettered or learned people from the popular one.
