The first Chamonix mountain guides' view of high mountains. This paper states some hypotheses from a current research on the history of the Chamonix Guides' Company. The first guides' conceptions of high mountains are analysed in relation with other types of conceptions : conception of the middle mountain and the native land ; conceptions of danger and death ; conceptions of the guide's profession ; conceptions of the client.
