The legitimacy of the so called «authority argument» has so far been discussed primarily by scholars who specialize in the field of Rational Reasoning in order to assess the conditions of an acceptable appeal to authority and expertise. In this paper, largue that this body of thinking is harly transposable into a project of normatization of political debates. For Rational Reasoning Theories, an appeal to authority is used in order to support an argument, or to convince of its validity. I will attempt to make it clear that on the contrary, appeals to authority can be made with the intention to produce effects in communication of other kinds.
