This article examines attitudes towards students’ environmental engagement, by confronting the point of view of school teachers to that of students in four French secondary schools. Official programs defining environmental education are first considered, in order to analyze the ways in which student action is presented. Secondly, a synthesis is proposed of remarks made by students and teachers during qualitative interviews, concerning the value of environmental action. Teachers’ attitudes towards environmental «good practices» , while varied, show the influence of discourses which accentuate individual responsibility for environmental change.
