The education can be understood as inculcation or as self-expression. The author shows that it is not a contradiction but a simple tension between two poles which organizes our experience. He explains the valuation of self-expression by a cultural phenomenon which Charles Taylor calls «the expressivist turn», and shows that the order to become oneself does not enter conflict with the social standards. It is possible to reconcile the education and the idea of a subject which autoformulates. The example of this conciliation is given by the moral education described by Kolberg that is more well-known under the name of «philosophy at school». This method indeed rests on the idea that the child must be invited to appeal to his internal resources...
