Some children spell each oral syllable with a single letter. It is supposed that such spelling codes a syllable or a phoneme : conscious of the need for a phonemic treatment, the child only partially carries through. 144 preschool children (4-5 years old) wrote six sentences with target syllables from three different syllabic structures. Spelling a single letter for one syllable is not the only one. Most often the single-letter spelling indicates a syllabic treatment, but at times also results from a partial phonemic treatment.
