The palaeo-environmental context. The Arles-Rhône 3 wreck, once set within its archaeological, geomorphological and sedimentological context, can lead to a proposed morphology of the Rhône channel that crossed Arles around the 1st century AD. The heavy works and banking of the channel played a probable role in the changing of hydraulic conditions that contributed to a contraction of the channel and improvement of its functioning.
