Infrared studies of soil clays at the Macaulay Institute have, over the past ten years, made a valuable contribution to characterizing their nature and properties. This paper reviews one aspect of this work, concerning the information on structure and composition which can be derived from study of hydroxyl vibrations in crystalline clay minerals.
