Sand, coarse silt and clay particles cannot be deposited simultaneously. Sandy and very silty clays are laminated. The laminae may be very thin but consist alternatingly of well sorted sand, silt and clay. Samples of finely laminated sediments collected for mechanical analysis, therefore, contain two or more different deposits and are of complex nature. The author discusses the distinction of these different materials in laminated deposits by means of their size frequency distribution. He uses a rectangular diagram, which shows the ratios of all size grades determined.
