L'historiographie française et le concept de « genre »

This article examines the cultural and institutional resistance to the use of gender as a category in French historiography. In France, history, and, more women's history, has not really assimilated the openings offered by the problematics of the construction of differences, nor the logical consequences of the use of gender. Cultural differences are partly responsible for this, and the polysémie nature of the word genre may add to the confusion. With a few exceptions, women's history in reluctant to engage in a historical analysis which would take into account the founding role of hierarchy and of relations of power and difference which are central to gender.A propos de l'utilisation du concept de genre comme outil d'analyse, cet article rend compte des résistances épistémologiques et méthodologiques qui se manifestent dans l'historiographie française. Le mode de penser l'histoire, marqué, en France, par la tradition de l'universalité « neutre », n'est qu'en partie responsable ; la nature polysémique du mot genre ajoute à la confusion. L'essentiel est ailleurs, cependant : au-delà de l'usage du mot, l'histoire des femmes en France, à quelques exceptions prêts, hésite à interroger la construction politique des dominations, au fondement de la partition des rôles — analyse critique qu'implique l'emploi de cette notion.Riot-Sarcey Michèle.
