Autour des terres du Lon Srïvisnu et de sa famille : un document administratif du Cambodge angkorien, l'inscription K. 1238

The stela that bears the inscription K. 1238 appeared on the art market in 2006. It is noteworthy both for the quality of its manufacture and for the wealth and originality of its contents. This text in Angkorian Khmer is administrative in nature. It draws together various orders issued by the royal assembly on the legitimate ownership of different pieces of land that pass from a dignitary to members of his family. It scrupulously records the circumstances of acquisition as well as the persons involved in the transactions. The assembly's writ focuses particularly on the presentation of the properties involved. Rather than their physical description, it is the history of their ownership that is the main priority, in order to preclude that any previous dispute invalidate the transactions. The apparently rather cumbersome administrative process takes recourse to events that sometimes date far back in time; it joins written testimonies, sworn depositions and even a cadastral map. The procedure and reimbursements of debt, whose description often requires technical vocabulary that had heretofore not been attested, help to refine our understanding of ancient Khmer society. The document thus provides a rare glance into the clerks' offices of the royal assembly and will constitute an important source of the study of judiciary institutions in Angkorian Cambodia.Apparue en 2006 sur le marché de l'art, la stèle portant l'inscription K. 1238 se distingue tant par la qualité de sa facture, que par la richesse et l'originalité de son contenu. D'un caractère administratif, ce texte en khmer angkorien réunit des actes émis par l'assemblée royale, légitimant la propriété de biens fonciers transmis par un dignitaire à des membres de sa famille. Les circonstances de l'acquisition des terres et les protagonistes y sont alors scrupuleusement présentés. L'enquête de l'assemblée insiste particulièrement sur la présentation des biens qui font l'objet de ces transactions. Plus que leur description physique, c'est l'histoire des terres qui est établie, afin qu'aucun ancien litige ne vienne invalider les transactions. Rapportant des faits parfois anciens, et réunissant des témoignages écrits, des dépositions sous serment et même un plan cadastral, l'administration y semble particulièrement exigeante, voire procédurière. Procès et remboursements pour dettes sont alors autant de situations affinant notre connaissance de la civilisation khmère, tout en véhiculant un lexique souvent inédit. Enfin, ce texte apparaît comme un rare témoignage des greffes de l'assemblée royale et constituera donc une source privilégiée pour l'étude des institutions judiciaires du Cambodge angkorien.Griffiths Arlo, Soutif Dominique.
