Les trois inhumations du site des Herbages aux Mureaux (Yvelines) : nouvelles données concernant les débuts de l’âge du Bronze ancien à l’ouest de Paris

In 2013, the Service archéologique départemental des Yvelines (SADY) was commissioned to undertake archaeological test trenching at Les Mureaux (Yvelines) in advance of major development works affecting installations owned by Astrium SAS. The area under consideration lies to the east of the existing site dedicated to the design and final integration of the Ariane 5 launcher. It is located about 40 km west of Paris, upstream of the Seine-Aubette confluence. Locally, the topography consists of a flat surface gradually rising to an average height of 22 m above sea level. It corresponds to a series of low terraces belonging to the floodplain of the River Seine, which at this point is almost 3 km wide. Towards the northern end of the development area the Holocene infillings are shaped by thick silty clay deposits lying on the chalk bedrock. To the south, ante-Holocene terraces are underlain by sand and gravel layers. The latter are capped by colluvial sediments which are generally shallow. The Early Bronze Age remains were precisely discovered on top of a slightly elevated ante-Holocene ridge flanking the western bank of a former tributary of the River Seine. They are situated in an area where the archaeological layers were partly destroyed by the setting-up of a military base in the late 1960s. Three individual burials, unevenly preserved, have been discovered there, forming a small, although incomplete, funerary complex. Despite some taphonomic problems, the three burials present common characteristics. They correspond to the individual burial of an adult, in supine position, the head preferentially oriented to the east. However, the skeletons are too partial to determine the decomposition environment or possible bone removals. With one exception, the 1960s levelling work destroyed any burial structures such as the sepulchral pit or a possible monument. It has been possible to obtain radiocarbon dates using unburnt human bone samples coming from the three burials. The first, a tibia fragment from grave 20.3, delivered a date of 3660 ± 40 BP (GrA-58051). The second and third, a skull and a vertebra fragment from graves 20.5 and 20.6 respectively, delivered a date of 3595 ± 40 BP (GrA-58052) and 3560 ± 40 BP (GrA-58053). Analyses, carried out by the University of Groningen (Netherlands), have produced consistent results, indicating that these graves were broadly contemporary. They seem to be part of a funerary cluster comprising a small quantity of individual graves, distributed over a surface area of at least 40 square metres. Nevertheless, it is worth bearing in mind that the mechanical stripping concerned a single trench measuring 55 m by 15 m, in a sector where erosion induced by military facilities is substantial. Under these conditions, the conclusions regarding the layout and extent of this funerary site must be interpreted with caution. From a chronological point of view, the aforementioned radiocarbon dates indicate that the bodies were buried during the last quarter of the third millennium BC or at the dawn of the second millennium BC. In the Paris Basin, this period, covering approximately three centuries, corresponds to the first stage of the Early Bronze Age, for which the archaeological record is still fraught with gaps. A single copper alloy dagger was recovered from grave 20.3, lying next to the left hipbone of the deceased. The dagger is exceptionally well preserved, measuring 11.6 cm in length and 4.3 cm in width. It consists of a flat blade, triangular in shape, whose arched heel possesses three circular holes around 3.5 mm in diameter. Two of them house plug rivets. The surface of the blade displays a deep green patina beneath which areas of blue corrosion products are visible. The latter underlines the omega-shaped hilt-mark. The overall shape and dimensions of this item are typical of flat daggers of the Butterwick type, first defined by S. Gerloff in 1975. Until a few decades ago, this type was traditionally believed to have been roughly contemporary with the grooved blades of the early stage of the Wessex Culture (ca 1950-1750 BC). Recent examination of well-documented assemblages tells a different story, partly supported by the refinement of the available radiocarbon dates. Actually, Butterwick-type daggers correspond to the earliest form of tin-bronze daggers in Great Britain, where they are mainly found in funerary contexts, accompanied by other grave goods. In most cases, flat axes, V-perforated buttons, flint arrowheads and late style Beakers refer to the middle stage of the British Beaker tradition (ca 2250-1950 BC), identified by S. Needham. As far as chronology is concerned, the dagger recovered from Les Mureaux does not bring new elements to the dating of the Butterwick type. Nevertheless, it opens up promising perspectives in relation to the major cultural and social shifts that affected the Paris Basin at the very end of the third millennium BC. As a matter of fact, this is the first time that a Butterwick-type dagger has been found outside Great Britain. Even though it may seem anecdotal, this evidence sheds new lights on cross-Channel interactions prior to the constitution and strengthening of the Channel/ southern North Sea maritory, depicted by S. Needham. It illustrates the existence of occasional contacts between two autonomous regions, sharing specific interests from the middle of the third millennium BC onwards. From this point of view, the Paris Basin can be regarded as a peripheral area, integrated to some extent within the network unifying Great Britain, Armorica and the area encompassing the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta. The dagger also provides new insights into the emergence of high-ranking characters, buried in single graves. In the case discussed here, the status of the deceased is embodied by the presence of a symbolic item. Elsewhere in the middle Seine valley, for a period spanning the transition between Early Bronze Age 1 and Early Bronze Age 2, the tendency is for individual elite graves to be within circular ditched enclosures.Au premier semestre 2013, le service archéologique départemental des Yvelines (SADY) est intervenu pour la réalisation d’un diagnostic préalable au projet d’extension des infrastructures industrielles exploitées par Airbus et sa filiale Astrium Space Transportation en bord de Seine, sur la commune des Mureaux (Yvelines), à environ 40 km à l’ouest de Paris. Cette opération archéologique a permis l’exploration partielle d’un ensemble funéraire de petite taille, mis au jour sur un peu plus de 40 m ² . Implanté au sommet d’un dôme sablo-graveleux, il comprend trois sépultures individuelles à inhumation, conservées de manière inégale. Le secteur concerné par les investigations a effectivement fait l’objet de terrassements importants à partir de la fin des années 1960, en raison de la construction d’une base militaire. Ces travaux ont manifestement affecté les formations superficielles, provoquant localement la destruction des vestiges enfouis. En dépit de ces problèmes taphonomiques, les sépultures en question semblent partager des caractéristiques communes. Elles accueillent l’inhumation primaire d’un adulte, en décubitus dorsal, la tête préférentiellement orientée à l’est. Les squelettes sont toutefois trop partiels pour déterminer le milieu de décomposition ou d’éventuels remaniements secondaires. À une exception près, les terrassements récents ont eu raison des structures associées à ces inhumations : fosse sépulcrale et éventuel monument. Le matériel anthropologique recueilli a systématiquement fait l’objet de mesures radiocarbone, réalisées par AMS au laboratoire de l’université de Groningen (Pays-Bas). Les résultats obtenus suggèrent la relative homogénéité chronologique de l’ensemble. Apparues dans le même horizon stratigraphique, les trois inhumations sont spatialement proches et peuvent être considérées comme des sépultures contemporaines sur la base des datations radiocarbone, appartenant plus vraisemblablement à la fin de l’étape initiale du Bronze ancien telle qu’elle a été définie pour le Bassin parisien. Elles constitueraient un groupe funéraire dont l’extension et la structuration ne peuvent être raisonnablement restituées si l’on tient compte de l’arasement général des niveaux archéologiques et de l’exigüité des surfaces explorées au cours du diagnostic. Seule une tombe a livré du mobilier. Il s’agit d’un poignard en alliage cuivreux, typologiquement comparable aux poignards de type Butterwick. Jusqu’à présent, ces poignards à lame plate et rivets massifs étaient exclusivement connus en Grande-Bretagne, en contexte funéraire, où ils sont fréquemment associés à du matériel typique d’une phase avancée du Campaniforme insulaire. Depuis la fin des années 1990, la vingtaine d’exemplaires recensés outre-Manche est datée d’une étape chronologique antérieure à l’émergence de la culture du Wessex (Wessex I). Les datations 14C exploitables confirment cet ancrage dans un intervalle de quelques siècles, compris entre l’extrême fin du IIIe millénaire et le début du IIe millénaire avant notre ère. En fournissant un jalon chronologiquement fiable, daté de la charnière entre le Bronze A1 et le Bronze A2, la découverte des Mureaux constitue une bonne illustration de certaines tendances, avérées dès 2500 av. J.-C. en France septentrionale, qu’il s’agisse du retour graduel à l’inhumation individuelle ou de la montée en puissance de quelques personnages privilégiés. Elle offre, en outre, de nouveaux éclairages sur les dynamiques culturelles qui affectent le centre du Bassin parisien à la fin du IIIe millénaire avant notre ère. Le poignard, probablement produit dans le Sud de l’Angleterre, signale certainement l’existence de contacts ponctuels entre la Grande-Bretagne et les régions situées le long du cours inférieur de la Seine. En l’état actuel de la documentation, il constitue l’un des premiers témoins tangibles de la mise en place des réseaux de diffusion caractéristiques du complexe Manche-mer du Nord, dont l’affirmation n’est pas antérieure au deuxième quart du IIe millénaire avant notre ère.Van Den Bossche Benjamin, Blin Arnaud.
