In 2013, the Service archéologique départemental des Yvelines (SADY) was commissioned to undertake archaeological test trenching at Les Mureaux (Yvelines) in advance of major development works affecting installations owned by Astrium SAS. The area under consideration lies to the east of the existing site dedicated to the design and final integration of the Ariane 5 launcher. It is located about 40 km west of Paris, upstream of the Seine-Aubette confluence. Locally, the topography consists of a flat surface gradually rising to an average height of 22 m above sea level.
