Lissage cartographique et animation spatio-temporelle : quelques réflexions théoriques et méthodologiques

The cartography of a phenomena like the population density is subject to many variations, according to the assumptions made on the relevant scales of space and time. Continuous representations of the spatial distribution of an index according to time-span and scale-span can be elaborated, which help to solve the modifiable areal unit problem and give the opportunity to produce animated maps according to scale or time variations. The theoretical and empirical interest of those animations is emphasized through one applications to the multiscalar analysis of the population density in the french Rhône Valley in 1990, and another to the dynamic of the population distribution on the territory of the former Czechoslovakia (1867-1991).Il n'existe pas de représentation cartographique unique d'un phénomène tel que la densité de population mais un continuum de représentations possibles qui dépendent des hypothèses émises sur les échelles pertinentes de temps et d'espace auxquelles on veut saisir le phénomène. Des représentations continues d'une distribution spatiale dans le temps et dans l'espace peuvent être élaborées, qui permettent de s'affranchir de la maille initiale de collecte et qui ouvrent la possibilité de construire des animations cartographiques scalaires et temporelles. L'intérêt à la fois théorique et empirique de ces animations est illustré par deux applications portant, pour l'une, sur la distribution multiscalaire de la population de la vallée du Rhône en 1990 et, pour l'autre, sur l'évolution des noyaux de peuplement en ex-Tchécoslovaquie (1867-1991).Grasland Claude.
