Géographie de la violence et gestion du territoire au Brésil. Le cas du Maranhão

The crisis of the 1980s and the setting up of economic restructuration policies, implying, in particular, the sale of public land and the privatization of state companies, have had important spatial implications : pillaging of raw materials, displacement of the peasant economy, over-exploitation of the uprooted labour foce, destruction of the environment, etc. The example of the Maranhâo state, in the North-East of Brazil, is significant of these processus. The expansion of the agricultural frontier and the implanting of huge forestry or animal-raising projects have reinforced land-owning concentration there and have provoked the eviction of autochthonous peoples from their ancestral homes. The metallurgical mining projects of the Grand Carajas Programme have led to the accentuation of land speculation and to incontrolled urbanization in the exportation.La crise des années 80 et la mise en place de politiques de restructuration économique, impliquant, en particulier, la vente des terres publiques et la privatisation d'entreprises d'Etat, ont eu d'importantes implications spatiales : pillage des matières premières, déplacement de l'économie paysanne, sur-exploitation d'une main-d'oeuvre déracinée, destruction du milieu etc. L'exemple de l'état du Maranhão, dans le Nordeste brésilien, est significatif de ces processus. L'expansion de la frontière agricole et l'implantation de méga-projets forestiers ou d'élevage y renforcent la concentration foncière et provoquent l'éviction des peuples autochtones de leurs terres ancestrales.
