Ecology and desertification in Africa. -This note is a survey of some ecological aspects of the arid and semi-arid lands and an analysis of the causes of desertification. It suggests the steps to be taken in order to mitigate it. It shows, by analyzing the various theories on climate evolution that the main causes of desertification are the growing influence of men and domestic animals and that the climate is merely a favourable circumstance. There is a discussion on the scientific and technical validity of the means which are suggested to put an end to the process of desertification (green belts, artificial rainfall, reducing salinity of sea-water, expanse of water in the middle of the Sahara) .
