This article describes how an experienced first-grade teacher, based on her own categorisation of her students’ levels, reconstructs and evaluates each of her students’ progress in learning to read at the end of the year. In noting progress, particular attention has been paid to any major changes in a student’s category. The data collected show that the teacher is capable of retracing, after the fact, the individual development of his or her students. The evidence also suggest that identifying a particular change in category is not based only on reading performance -which is often different from one student to anothe-but also takes into account other dimensions related to behaviour or attitudes.
