An analysis of the main bio-assessment methods based on benthic macroinvertebrates. - The first analysis to assess inland water quality dates back to the early 20th century, but it was not until the 1960s, with increasing water demands and pollution awareness, that state agencies and standardised assessments were set up, including those based on benthic macroinvertebrates (England, 1960 ; France, 1964). Four categories of methods are currently available : two of them are derived from the Trent Biotic Index (1964) and the Chandler's Biotic Index (1970), to which, on the basis of experience, predictive methods (1988) and rapid bio-assessment methods (1989) were added.
